The world's widest aero wheels significantly improve aerodynamics from 35mm WAM road and gravel tires to MTB tires.

A wide tire needs a wide rim to avoid turbulence at the tire-to-rim transition. The Discus 45 | 40 is the first aero wheel designed for 35-40mm tires. Its 29mm internal width makes the chosen tire even wider and reduces dive.

TRULY FAST AERODYNAMICS

We design for the real world, and for gravel roads, where people prefer 700x35-40c tires. It's pointless to fit a narrow aero rim behind a tire like this. You'd be adding weight without the aerodynamic benefit of such a wheel, as the airflow never actually "sees" the rim.

After testing two dozen prototype wheels in the wind tunnel, the Discus 45 | 40 LTD was born. 45 mm deep for good aerodynamics without excessive crosswind vulnerability. 40 mm wide to fit 35-40 mm tires. The result is unprecedented speed on gravel roads. And while the shape is optimized for the 3T Exploro, the Discus 45 | 40 LTD makes any gravel bike faster.

NOSETAIL DESIGN

Similar to the Discus 45 | 32 LTD, the Discus 45 | 40 uses the NoseTail design to optimize the performance of the 60 mm deep rim in a 45 mm profile.

By definition, rim design is a compromise, as any aerodynamic shape on the front half doesn't work as well 180 degrees later, when it's inverted. The NoseTail shape was developed by legendary Dave Kennedy (an aerodynamics professional of over 50 years) and 3T's head of design, Gerard Vroomen. In fact, the NoseTail sacrifices some performance on the front half of the wheel in favor of better performance on the rear half. Not only do these two effects compensate, but the resulting shape also requires a lower rim depth and better directs airflow from the rear of the front wheel to the downtube. This is especially useful on the Exploro RaceMax, where the downtube is located very close to the front tire.
