British mountaineer George Mallory was once asked why he wanted to attempt to become the first man to climb Everest, and he simply replied, "Because it's there."

Mountains, those great stone colossi, have fascinated us and driven us to conquer them. Thus, inspired by all the sensations that the journey to the heights produces, we have created our 29th issue, a Mountains special in which we explored mountain passes such as Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii, the longest mountain pass in the world (yes, it's cyclable); Angliru, guided by photographer Francis Tsang; Pico Veleta, through the eyes of professional cyclist Luis Ángel Maté; Passo Spluga, the latest sensation of the Giro d'Italia, through our Escape; And we've delved into the tunnels of the Alps, those fascinating and disturbing holes, with photojournalist Michael Blann.

We also revisit the love-hate relationship between cycling and skiing, as well as the history of the mountains in the three Grand Tour stage races. We let former pro Juan Antonio Flecha—who joins VOLATA as a contributor—guide us through the mountains that inspired him to become a cyclist, and there's much more to discover. There are also the usual sections and columns by Laura Meseguer and Ander Izagirre, and other content, such as the illustrated history of Shimano's Dura-Ace groupset.

All of this is crowned by the cover by Elena Mompó, who illustrated the Bola del Mundo, the popular nickname for Alto de las Guarramillas, in the mountains of Madrid.
